Del Potro went into the final having won 29 of his previous 30 matches - the only defeat coming against Andy Murray at the US Open - but lost 6-1 6-4.The Argentine took a medical time-out for stomach problems after losing the first set in 22 minutes.
"Everyone could see he had a problem, but he took some pills and was getting back into the match," said Berdych.
"It might have been different if Juan Martin was feeling better but I served well and everything came together," added the 23-year-old ninth seed.
